Plus, I once lived in Tokyo for a year and know the aesthetic—and I love it for its whimsy and its minimalism. This style of design is more about what you take out than what you put in.

  • A Lefty-Friendly Kitchen

Top tips for creating the kitchen of a left-handed person’s dreams

Lefties approach life—and their kitchens—differently. Left-handed people tend to stack dirty dishes on the right side of the sink, for instance, while dish drainers (and clean dishes) wind up on the left. And they typically see to it that the burners on the left side of the stove get more use than those on the right. Yet most all kitchens are set up so that right-handed people feel right at home—a fact that most right-handers take fully for granted.

If you’re a lefty with plans to remodel your current kitchen or build a new home, you’re likely seeing it as an opportunity to get things right. A smart kitchen is a kitchen customized to suit the person who will be spending the most time there; customizing to suit their dominant hand can affect the placement of everything from dishwasher to sink, faucet to counter space to the cooktop. Read on for lefty-friendly kitchen design tips.

The most astounding thing about copper? It’s essentially ageless. In some cases, you can scarcely tell old copper from new copper. So, while stone sinks from the 18th and 19th centuries most certainly show their age and early sinks made of zinc and cast iron have since corroded or rusted, even the oldest of copper sinks are Benjamin Button-like in appearance. And it gets better: In addition to not aging, copper actually grows better with age and the more it is used the faster it will re-patina. (Most marks left in sinks by acidic substances will re-patina naturally within a few days.) Copper’s self-healing capacities are well-documented, as are its antimicrobial properties. Are you starting to understand why we sometimes can’t help but proclaim copper “magic”?
