Founded in 1996 and based in San Luis Obispo on California’s Central Coast, Native Trails is a
top designer and manufacturer of functional, sustainable products for the kitchen and bath made by artisans around the world—most notably hand-forged, hand-hammered copper sinks, bathtubs and accessories.
CEO Naomi Neilson originally founded Native Trails as a college student, with the dream to bring the craftsmanship of artisans she met during her travels to central Mexico back to California. It’s a dream that continues to drive the company forward since its founding nearly 20 years ago, along with commitments to innovative design, eco-sustainable salvage techniques and the use of premium materials like copper, iron, brushed nickel, reclaimed and FSC certified wood and NativeStone® concrete.
After nearly two decades, Native Trails’ award-winning products are found in the homes of international clientele and in the pages of publications including Elle Décor, Architectural Digest and many more. The company’s product line has grown to include concrete sinks, bath vanities, mirrors, range hoods and furniture, as well as luxury lifestyle products and accessories. Beyond kitchen and bath products, Native Trails provides a complete lifestyle vision for the home.
Today, Native Trails ships its award-winning products to more than 1,300 showrooms across the U.S. and Canada, while its global website allows sales to countries around the globe. It partners with artisans in Vietnam, Mexico, and the United States.
Upon founding the company, Naomi worked with artisans specializing in ceramic tile and home decor, folk art of all types, and many different types of metals, creating designs that appealed to the American market using traditional artisan techniques.
Shortly after she enlisted artisans to create the first copper sink prototypes made of 100 percent recycled copper, they became Native Trails’ core product and the company became the industry leader within five years. Native Trails was the first company to have its copper sinks certified by the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and listed by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), where it helped write the copper basin standards. The Decorative Plumbing & Hardware Association (DPHA) took notice of the company’s fast rise and accomplishments by naming Naomi the Manufacturing Professional of the Year in 2005.
Native Trails created its first bath vanities to complement and showcase its copper basins in 2008. Since the success of its original Cuzco Collection vanity series, which combines an artisan-crafted iron vanity base with hammered copper insets, the company expanded its product line to include other bath vanities, mirrors and accessories using sustainable materials such as reclaimed or FSC-certified wood and eco-friendly bamboo.
In 2011, Native Trails unveiled the Vintner’s Collection, an award-winning series of vanities and accessories that draws inspiration from California’s wine culture and incorporates material that would otherwise be discarded—oak wine staves and barrels—into finished product.
The Renewal Series, launched in 2012, reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to finding alternative sustainable materials, relying on FSC® certified bamboo as the primary source. The series features a substantial number of vanities and coordinating pieces that encompass a broad design aesthetic and showcase bamboo’s strength and versatility.
In 2013, Native Trails introduced the Americana Collection, which expanded on its popular reclaimed wood vanities, with new storage components, accessories, and new finishes. The entire collection is made by local, California-based artisans using wood salvaged from structures and given new life as artfully textured bath furnishings.
In 2014, Native Trails continued its design innovation by introducing its NativeStone concrete sinks. This groundbreaking collection of luxe, smooth sinks is made of a unique blend of concrete and jute—pioneered by Native Trails and weighing approximately 40 percent less than standard concrete. The NativeStone collection includes kitchen, bar/prep, and lavatory sinks—including the company’s first trough sinks for the bath.
Native Trails recently returned to its home décor roots by unveiling a lifestyle collection of copper vases, ornaments, decorative tiles, among other home accessories, available for sale through its website.
